Blackout Tattoos | The Tattoo Trend That Will Change Your Life

Blackout tattoos have been rising in popularity recently. This is thanks to the aesthetic dominance of images on social media and an increase in dark blackwork tattoos.

Many also turn to this kind of ink to cover-up a tattoo or a number of tattoos that are old or outdated, or otherwise disliked. But are blackout tattoos safe for your skin?

What Are These Blackout Tattoos?

Blackout tattoos are when a large part of your body, often arms, legs or neck are covered in black ink.

They are definite statement pieces that attract a lot of attention. They used to be a real rarity, but lately, their popularity has exploded.

Unsurprisingly, blackouts are mostly done as a cover-up tattoos. Mostly done to hide old designs that have fallen out of favour, they can also serve to cover up scars.

However, they are increasingly becoming a first-choice tattoo of choice for many due to their striking, minimalist aesthetic.

While it is definitely an impressive look, there are a few things to consider before deciding to have large parts of your skin covered in black ink.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Blackout Tattoos?

This trend is more for those who are hardcore tattoo enthusiasts and like with any tattoo style, you should consider the pros and cons before getting inked.

Besides the powerful visual impact, solid black tattoos come with several positive aspects. They’re a super-convenient way of hiding old tattoos, they’re unique and appealing,  and they look smashing on any part of the body.

While some choose striking black blocks to make a statement, others use colour as a background to create extra dimension.  There’s no actual meaning for tattoos like this, they’re purely aesthetic.

Perhaps no piece of body art draws the eye the way a solid black sleeve does.

As for the cons, although there are many articles according to which excessive ink can cause allergies or even more severe problems, you should know that you will not get ink poisoning from a solid black tattoo.

Blackout tattoos are also not particularly fun for your tattoo artist. This is because they’d be sitting for hours just going back and forth, doing the same thing.

And while your tattoo artist doesn’t have to be passionate about your tattoo, it does help for them to be at least actively engaged.

While a blackout tattoo may seem like it will take longer to heal, the process is about the same as any other tattoo. It takes roughly two weeks for it to mostly heal, but it will take six months to fully heal.

Although they may also provide for some questionable cultural appropriation issues, the blackout tattoo is becoming a popular tattoo trend. They are unique. They are one to add if you are over your old designs or want to stand out from the crowd.

Always consult with your tattoo artist on the best possible way of going through with a tattoo such as this.
